The 26-year-old graduate, Makwena Patience Ramoba has established her own poultry company called Manjuju Chicken Farm at Ga-Mamaila village in Sekgosese outside Modjadjiskloof with the savings she made from her work salary.

She has always wanted to start a business but her fear to fail overcame her. Nonetheless, that was just temporary as she grew her confidence with the say that goes “don’t fail to try but try and fail”.

“I was scared that not having enough capital and any business background I would not succeed. After some years of being employed, I started saving my peanuts salary to start building a chicken house, get start up package and training from polygamy chicken farm.

Moreover, she met youth who were doing great work in the business world no matter the challenges the faced daily. Their fighting spirit to pursue their dreams was such an inspiration to Makwena to better start now than later.

“I got the courage to decide that I had to face my fears and see where I would get in life. I decided to start with poultry because I have always loved farming as it seemed like the kind of work I would enjoy and wouldn’t get tired of doing. I also had to consider the space and resources I had and poultry was the good starting point for me to kick off the business”, she told Sekgosese Insider.

Interestingly, Makwena got blessings from her late father and has already hired two employees who help her with taking care of broilers.

“I explained my business plan to my late dad and he agreed hence you see me here today. I started with 600 broilers, selling them R65 each and R60 for those who are buying 15 and more. Positively, all went well that’s why I even hired a female and male employee who help me with feeding and taking care of broilers”, she explained.

The level-headed Makwena futher told Sekgosese Insider that she sees her company growing with outlets all over the province.

“We are already shaking up things by simply offering certain guarantees. Here we do things differently compared to other small businesses by developing a unique way to help the business grow. I’m applying skills I have learnt from school including management”, said Makwena who studied Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain from Rosebank college.

She further confessed that the teachings from her studies have helped her run the business better and professional. Her achievements this year include obtaining poultry certificate from an Agricultural SETA to equip herself with important knowledge about the business.

However, like most other emerging young business people, access to more land remains a challenge as she’s trying to expand her business. She is currently operating from a piece of land belonging to a family relative.

The business-minded Makwena offers free delivery for clients who order in bulk and uses social media to promote and advertise her business.
